OphthalmicsMacular Degeneration >> |
AMD is the leading cause of blindness in those over 60. While newly introduced therapies have over a 90% success rate, the majority of patients delay starting their treatment by more than 6 months, causing irreversible vision loss. We are addressing the leading unmet need in this market through a combination of patient research and tool development. Open Innovators led two research studies in 2008/2009 to better understand patient behavior and presentation delays, one of them sponsored by the leading bio-technology company in the AMD field. We also are working under National Eye Institute grants together with Johns Hopkins University in a parallel line of research to develop a novel program of home monitoring tools (KeepSight) for patient use. With FDA registration planned in 2010, in market trials are now underway. |
OphthalmicsDiabetic Retinopathy >> |
DR is the leading cause of blindness in those 20 to 60 years old. With over a 90% success rate in current treatments, the number one unmet medical need is focused on late presentation. Our interactive patient outreach program (I-Pop) use the principles of behavioral psychology in a game format to modify patient behavior and improve the likelihood of timely presentation and adherence with routine exam schedules. |
| Orthopedics >> |
Our interest in orthopedics is in the application of Universal Design. The principles of universal design are centered around the ability of products to provide advantage across a broad spectrum of users. Our research in the orthopedics area is on consumer & kitchen wares that enable people challenged with reduced limb strength to be self-sufficient. Through Universal Design, our goal is to take these appliances into a design category than anyone would find fashionable and desirable for their home and lifestyle. |
| Energy >> |
One can’t be active in today’s business climate without some element of clean and green in the portfolio. Our interests in the energy arena focus on technologies that will become necessary to support the commercialization of future proposed energy solutions. The invention of the i-phone created a market for .mobi applications; what will the creation of future energy technologies such as biomass, tar-sand exploitation and cyano-bacteria lead to? |
| Conflict Resolution >> |
When you bring teams of people together for over a decade and see the power of collective thought, it is hard not too see that each one of us can make a difference. Our program in conflict resolution is centered around a ten year goal to use open source web technology as a vehicle to improve inter-cultural understanding of the language and behaviors of conflict escalation and resolution. While this is much more low-tech than mapping the human genome, over the coming years, we will continue to map the elemental building blocks associated with conflict its resolution. |
